The papers contain copy prints of four photographs: Claire Lee Chennault as a baby (ca. 1893); Claire Lee Chennault as a young boy (ca. 1898); a Woodmen of the World group photograph from Gilbert, La., featuring John Stonewall Chennault, the father of Claire Lee Chennault (ca. 1915-1920); and Claire Lee Chennault while stationed at Maxwell Field, Ala. (ca. 1930-1935). Also included is a copy of a letter by Ernest N. Chennault, son of John Stonewall Chennault and his fourth wife, Dille Elizabeth Young, arguing for the placement of the Chennault house in Gilbert, La., on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault was born in Commerce, Tex., on Sept. 6, 1893, to John Stonewall Chennault and his second wife, Jessie B. Lee. He worked as a high school principal and earned his flier's wings as a military pilot in 1917. By 1935, he was the chief fighter flight trainer at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, Ala.
